Cinderella is the latest film to get the "Honest
Trailers" YouTube treatment, alongside the release of the new live-action
remake which debuted in cinemas over the weekend. The 1950 Disney classic,
widely accepted as the movie that turned around Walt Disney Studios and enabled
it to continue making films, is mocked for its outdated, anti-feminist
messages.
The "honest" voiceover describes it as the film
which "will cancel out all the empowering things your daughter learned
from Frozen." It adds the story is one "where girls are taught to be
pushovers, do all the housework and their problems will disappear if they're
hot enough to land a rich husband."
The cute singing mice who keep Cinderella company in her tower
are also critiqued, particularly for their "Work Song," and Cinders's
Fairy Godmother is slammed for waiting so long to help out the heroine — also,
you know, for only turning up with a pretty dress and not coming to her aid
"when her parents died or when her step family forced her into
slavery."
